Glossary of terms

If you’re unsure about any of the words or terms used by realsmart then it’s a good idea to check this page and see exactly what we mean!

A records
An A record simply redirects one domain to another IP address.
A web browser is a piece of software that is used to view web pages. Popular web browsers include Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer.
Cloud, or ‘cloud computing’ is a modern term that describes the concept of having all resources available over the internet. This basically means that files and software are stored remotely online instead of directly on a computers harddrive. This gives the huge advantage of being able to access them anywhere in the world on any device providing internet access is available.
CNAME records
CNAME records specify where a user can find your web pages, or any other URL. For example, you may use CNAMEs to associate your domain with another domain.
A domain is a website’s address. This is what is typed into a web browser to point it towards the websites location(an IP address).
To embed means to place one thing into another. In a computing(and web) sense this is usually the act of inserting an item of media inside of a webpage. This could be an image, audio clip, video clip or even a complete other website.
iOS is the mobile operating system that is used by the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. These are all classed as ‘iOS devices’.
IP Address
An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device within a network that is connected to the internet. All websites on the internet have their own domain. Domain names such as just point to these harder to remember numbers.
Items are the name given to rafls, rmaps, rpassports, rcasts and rwebs within realsmart. Items are owned by the user that has created them and can be shared with any other user in the school.
The term migration is simply the act of moving something form one place to another. With regards to realsmart this is just the act of moving the location of one website to another URL.
An MIS (Management Information System) is used within schools to manage important data. MIS’s such as SIMS and Facility provide a suite of software covering all parts of a schools’ administration, from behaviour and achievement, planning curriculum and lesson structures, dinner money, educational learning plans, and much more. realsmart uses a school’s MIS to keep all the users information synced so there’s no need for manual imports and tedious data changes every school year.
MX records
MX records are added to a domain to tell senders how to send email for that domain.
Pages are very similar to posts but aren’t listed in any order. Pages are for content such as “About Us” or “Contact” etc. Pages live outside of the normal blog chronology, and are often used to present timeless information about yourself or your site
Posts are the entries that display in reverse chronological order on your school website. This makes the website act like a blog that is frequently updated and very active.
Provisioning is the act of creating users on a service automatically by using another source of user accounts. In the case of realsmart it can either be the creation of realsmart users from your MIS or the creation of google accounts from the realsmart users.
rafls are the best tool to consistently deliver learning objectives and monitor student progress and feedback as they learn.
A great tool for creating blogs and podcasts to record the learning process along with lesson summaries, action points and progress reviews.
rmaps are the perfect tool for creating mind maps, concept maps and graphical organisers.
rpassport is a tool for assessing the competencies, characteristics, qualities or habits of a learner.
rwebs are collaborative websites that make it simple and quick to create media-rich web content.
The realsmartcloud is the complete package. This includes the realsmart learning portfolio, the WordPress powered school website, and a Google Apps for Education account.
Within realsmart and Google you can share items and documents respectively. By sharing something you are allowing another user or group of users to gain access to that item or document and view it whenever they like.
Single sign-on (SSO) is mechanism whereby a user can login to one application and gain access to a range of other services through that one login. In realsmart’s case, when a user logs into their school’s website, they will also be logged in to realsmart, WordPress, and Google.
Sync (short for synchronise) is the act of keeping things harmonized and together. In terms of realsmart, this usually means keeping users synchronised and mirrored between a school’s MIS and our database.
A URL is a simple string of characters that points to a web address.
Web app
A web application is an application that is accessed by users over a network such as the Internet. This means it can be accessed from anywhere and doesn’t require the application to be installed on different devices.
WordPress is an incredibly popular CMS(Content Management System) that your school website is built in. It’s easy-to-learn and very flexible. You can find out more about WordPress here.
