Site Accessibility

Schools are partially exempt but do need an accessibility statement.

Updated 20 hours ago

All UK service providers have a legal obligation to make reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010. Schools and nurseries are partially exempt.

All our sites are fully responsive and built in accordance with the WCAG 2.1AA accessibility standards.

Schools are partially exempt but do need an accessibility statement.

Here is a basic template you can use:

Accessibility statement

This accessibility statement applies to the ‘School Name Here’ Website

This website is run by ‘School Name Here’ with realsmart technology. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.

For example, that means you should be able to:

change colours, contrast levels and fonts

zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen

navigate most of the website using just a keyboard

navigate most of the website using speech recognition software

listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

Improving accessibility

How and when we plan to improve accessibility on this website.

Content that's not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Some of our older PDFs and downloadable documents do not meet accessibility standards. However, we plan to ensure that moving forward all PDFs meet WCAG 2.1 Accessibility standards.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they're not essential to providing our services.

We are developing a strategy to ensure that documents which are essential to providing our services, are made accessible. This includes:

information on how users can access our service

forms published in word documents and PDFs

The strategy prioritises PDFs that are opened and used regularly or have information that is a statutory requirement.

We plan to ensure that all essential PDFs meet accessibility regulations by April ‘Date Here’.

Live Video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared on 30 June 2025. It was last reviewed on ‘Date Here’.

This website was last tested on ‘Date Here’. The test was carried out by our school website team.

The test was carried out by ‘add name of organisation that carried out test, or indicate that you did your own testing’. The most viewed pages were tested by our website team. A further audit of the website was carried out to the WCAG 2.2 AA standard.

The government have provided an example accessibility statement which you can amend and customise for your school or MAT website.
